History

Charles and Lola Melichar purchased the dairy in 1937. Thier son, Ben and his wife, Grace, purchased the farm 30 years later in 1967. Jim and Ben Jr. - sons of Ben and Grace - bought the farm in 1983. In 1986 Jim and his wife, Sherri, took over full ownerhsip of the dairy.

Expansion and Operation

In 1995 a 148-cow freestall barn was built along with an eight-stall walk-through flat barn parlor and holding area. Today the parlor has grown to 20 stalls and two freestall buildings have been added to hold the 700 milking cows. Buildings have also been constructed to house 250 calves and heifers that are located on the farm. The farm consists of 310 acres, with an additional 800 acres rented, on which they harvest alfalfa and corn.

Jim Melichar serves as General Manager of the dairy. Sherri Melichar (who used to milk cows) is currently a music teacher at Lumen Christi School as well as a piano teacher and church organist.

The 12 additional employees (consisting of some relatives) share all duties of feeding, calf raising, field work and maintenance.
